Automatic or Manual
One of the biggest questions you will face when buying your next car is whether you should go for manual or automatic transmission. There are pros and cons to both, so we have put together our guide to help you decide which to go for.
Automatic cars are undoubtedly easier to drive. Chosen for convenience, with no clutch to control and a selection of driving options. Without the need to change between gears, automatic cars offer a smoother ride too – with no stalling or stuttering. If you spend a lot of time in rush hour traffic, you will also spend more time focusing on the road and less time on the clutch pedal.
They are more expensive to buy, even if you opt for pre-owned. So, if you are on a tight budget, finding the car you want with an automatic transmission may be tricky. Some drivers say that they don’t like the lack of control that comes with an automatic. With the lack of gears, you can feel less connected to the car.
A manual car gives you total control. This can be advantageous in wintry or tricky conditions. You can also get more speed from a manual transmission, shifting between the gears and transferring power from the engine to the wheels. Because they have a less complex design, manual cars are often cheaper to maintain, unless your clutch goes!
Some would argue that a manual car is not as safe as an automatic because you have to take one hand off the wheel to change gears. Others complain of discomfort due to the left leg always being in use for the clutch.
