How to Spot Your Air-con Is on the Way Out

Our cars are often the home to many nasty smells, from left over food dropping down seat cracks or gym bags festering in the boot. The smell in your cabin however may be the result of an air-con unit on the verge of malfunctioning.

·         Damp smells: This can signal a build-up of mould capable of damaging the inside of your air-con.

·         Pungent odours: This can show that your air-con is damaged due to an influx of dirt, grime and dust blocking up the important pipes.

·         Chemical or exhaust fume smells: This may be due to a leak in the system causing the smell of the liquid to be emitted from the faulty air-con. It is best to take your car to a garage if you do this, as breathing in these fumes can cause you to feel dizzy.

·         A smell of gas: This can mean that there is a potential coolant leakage.

Why You Should Recharge Your Air-con

Other than obviously keeping you cool on hot days, recharging your system can actually increase your fuel efficiency. When your air-con refrigerant is low, the system has to work harder to cool the air and therefore uses more fuel. The super-cool refrigerant used also has an added bonus of cooling down the air con compressor and keeps it from failing due to overheating.
